Can you tell me how to tell the difference between brass and gold ?

The easy way to tell the difference between brass and gold, should you have two pieces of about the same size is by weight. The gold piece will be heavier. However this is not a sure method unless you know 1 piece is brass and 1 piece is gold. The only true test is melting the piece down as gold assayers and refiners do. There are however some tests in between that may be helpful for your purposes. The easiest is a "pin test". This works by taking a hard pin or sewing needle and trying to mark the piece. It is best to select an area that won't show because if it is gold you will put a pin hole in it as gold is actually a "soft metal". Brass probably will not mark. Other testing methods used are "gold acid tests" and "atomic" x-rays.
