One of the earliest flowers of the spring, the Narcissus, also known as the Daffodil, is another flower which got its name from Greek mythology. The story is well known. The handsome Narcissus saw his reflection in a pool of water, fell in love with his own beauty, went to kiss his own reflection and fell into the pool and drowned.
Used in funeral ceremonies by the Greeks and Egyptians and carrying amedieval legend that if a Narcissus droops when you looked at it, it was an omen of death. It is no wonder that this bright yellow flower should be the flower of the month that offers the shortest day, and the beginning of the dead of winter.
