Get a handle on knobs.

First, understand houses. Theyíre expensive.

"You could get nice knobs and spend $1,000," says Marc Adler, manager of the decorative hardware department at Adlerís Hardware in Providence. "On a million-dollar home, itís not a big expense."

Most often, Adler says, decorative knobs are installed in kitchens. New cabinets can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Why, Adler wonders, would people put cheap knobs on expensive cabinets? For a few hundred dollars, they can complement their cabinetsí quality with decorative and distinctive knobs.

"You're really adding jewelry to your cabinets," Adler says.

Adlerís Hardware started selling decorative knobs about four years ago, after another hardware store that sold them went out of business.
