ART IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND

Get a handle on knobs.

First, understand houses. They’re expensive.

"You could get nice knobs and spend $1,000," says Marc Adler, manager of the decorative hardware department at Adler’s Hardware in Providence. "On a million-dollar home, it’s not a big expense."

Most often, Adler says, decorative knobs are installed in kitchens. New cabinets can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Why, Adler wonders, would people put cheap knobs on expensive cabinets? For a few hundred dollars, they can complement their cabinets’ quality with decorative and distinctive knobs.

"You're really adding jewelry to your cabinets," Adler says.

Adler’s Hardware started selling decorative knobs about four years ago, after another hardware store that sold them went out of business.
