"We thought this might create an opportunity for us," Adler says. "We werenít sure how it would do, so we went into it slowly."

At first, one or two people a week would inquire about Adlerís decorative hardware. Now, itís about a dozen people a day.

"People want something different that they canít find at the Ďbig box stores,í where thereís a very limited selection," Adler says.

Glass, brass, pewter and chrome are some of the substances from which high-end knobs are made. There are traditional, contemporary and modern knobs. They resemble animals and fish, plants and people, just about anything.

"When people come into our store, theyíre surprised to see whatís available," Adler says.

Adlerís started with a couple lines of knobs, with each manufacturerís line featuring anywhere from a couple dozen varieties of knobs, to a couple thousand.

Adlerís now carries 30 lines of knobs.
