An ancient flower, first named Dianthus by the Greek botanist Theophrastus, 
referring to the same root words as divine and flower. Another possible variation 
is carnis, for flesh incarnation, referring to the incarnation of God as human.

Other varieties are known as Pinks, and Sweet William.
