According to
the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards
are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending
holiday of the year. That’s 1,000,000,000 people expressing affection
and love for each other. As large a number as this is, it does not include
the number of hand-made Valentines presented to loved ones by school
children and adults alike. In February, after the groundhog, Punxsutawney
Phil has shared his prediction about the coming spring, classrooms light
up with all shades of red and pink hearts backed with paper doilies
brought in by students from mom’s craft area stash. Busy hands cut,
paste, and carefully sign their Valentines.
Valentine’s Day is also
a great day for giving gifts of jewelry. Hearts, flowers and birds, all
symbolic of love and romance are assembled into charm bracelets, earrings,
and lush necklaces. In the craft and home décor realm, brass heart charms
glued onto hand-made Valentines or even fashioned into an ornate novelty
clock or wall hanging can give a hand-made crafted Valentine a unique
look. A romantic dinner table setting can include bobeches with charming
hearts and cupids reflecting the candlelight can add just the right touch
to an at-home Valentine’s dinner for two. |
